The Three Immune System Types
Your immune system is a vital player in your overall health and well-being. When your immune system is not working properly, you start to feel sluggish, under the weather and exhausted. When you have a strong immune system, your body can produce antibodies that help guard itself against dangerous invaders and acts as the protection system that keeps your body’s cells, organs and tissues safe.
While most people know of the importance of a healthy immune system, few understand the intricacies of immunity. Did you know that every single person has three types of immunity?
Three Types Of Immunity
Adaptive Immunity
Adaptive immunity is commonly referred to as active immunity and is the immunity that develops throughout your lifetime. You develop active immunity when exposed to various illnesses throughout your life.
Adaptive immunity occurs when your body is presented with an antigen and then communicates information about it to other parts of your body. Specific antibodies are then produced by B lymphocytes (white blood cells) over the course of 14 days. The body memorizes this response to recognize and attack more quickly if it encounters the antigen again.
Innate Immunity
Innate immunity is the type of immunity that you are born with. Your body is designed to help fight off invaders and to try and keep you healthy. Your skin is also part of your innate immunity as it creates a barrier, blocking toxins and invaders from entering your system.
This part of your immune system consists of proteins and cells in the body that are always ready to fight pathogens. It is our first line of defense (a physical barrier) that recognizes and neutralizes antigens and foreign invaders but develops no “memory” for the invading agent.
Passive Immunity
Passive immunity is a kind of immunity borrowed from a different source and only lasts for a short time. Passive immunity is transferred from mother to child through the placenta before birth, and through breast milk after birth. Blood products that contain antibodies, such as immune globulin, can also confer passive immunity. Passive immunity is immediate, but generally only lasts a few months.
Although antibodies are produced by the white blood cells responding to an immune system attack, scientists have also devised ways to use antibody treatment to combat invaders. For instance, vaccines trigger the production of antibodies to teach the immune system to combat future illnesses, boosting your body’s immune system.
